These skills are valuable for VA work, and you’ll find that many clients are willing to train you on the job if you show you have these basic competencies. Look up these skills on Youtube and learn what each program is.

These courses typically cover topics like client communication, managing schedules, invoicing, and specialized skills such as social media management or bookkeeping. I love this course as it gave me the confidence to take on bigger clients and projects.

Start by creating a professional LinkedIn profile and a simple website or portfolio that showcases the services you offer. This doesn’t have to be fancy—it just needs to highlight your skills and the services you provide. Consider having a small website with your services listed and contact information. 

My tip- Join Upwork and create a freelancer profile. This is how I got started in both Va and freelance content writing. Clients come to Upwork and post what they need completed. You can also look at what jobs are being posted. You’ll find something to suit your skills and level. Just get started!

You can also join VA-focused Facebook groups or forums, where clients often post job opportunities. Networking with others in the VA community can help you find your first job or gain recommendations.

5. Start Small and Offer Your Services for Low Rates

When you’re just starting, it can be helpful to offer your services at a lower rate to gain experience and build your portfolio. Many VAs start by taking on smaller tasks like managing emails, scheduling appointments, or handling customer inquiries. In the beginning I said ‘yes’ to anything extra a client asked and I learnt as I went along! Thankfully I picked it up quickly haha!!

You don’t need to be an expert in everything! I have a friend and she is exclusively a data/spreadsheet VA. She is amazing and can do anything with a spreadsheet for her clients. She now has closed her books to new clients because she has so much work!
